San Bernardino County Public Works – Special Districts has launched SD Parks Explorer, a new self-guided tour app designed to help visitors learn more about some of the parks, preserves, and facilities we manage.

The app currently features the North Etiwanda Preserve, Big Bear Alpine Zoo, and Desert View Conservation Area, giving visitors an easy way to explore each location at their own pace while learning more about the places they are visiting.

The idea was to create an experience where visitors can use their phone as a guide while they explore. SD Parks Explorer brings that concept to Special Districts locations, with information tailored to each site.

At the North Etiwanda Preserve and Desert View Conservation Area, the app helps visitors learn more about the natural environment, trails, conservation efforts, and features they may see along the way. At the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, visitors can learn more about the Zoo, its animals, and its work in rehabilitation, conservation, and education.

The app was developed in-house with support from County staff, including GIS and technology resources. Creating our own platform gave us the flexibility to build something around our sites and visitor needs, while also allowing the app to grow over time.

Instead of relying only on signs, brochures, or printed materials, SD Parks Explorer gives visitors another way to access information while they are actually out exploring. Content can also be updated as sites change and new information becomes available.

The goal is to make it easier for people to connect with these locations, understand what makes them unique, and get more out of their visit.

Additional Special Districts locations may be added in the future as the app continues to grow.
