Technology Services has successfully launched a robust security program combining Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Single Sign-On (SSO) using Microsoft Entra. This initiative was designed to strengthen the security of all enterprise systems while simultaneously creating a more user-friendly experience for staff.
Innovative Solutions for Field Staff
Standard MFA programs often require users to have individual smartphones to receive security codes. However, many of our field staff operate in crews that share devices and do not have dedicated work phones, making a smartphone-based approach impractical. To solve this, the department deployed hardware tokens using Yubico’s YubiKey technology. This provides staff with a secure second factor that does not rely on personal devices or require the department to purchase and maintain additional mobile equipment.
Strengthening Security and Usability
The result of this implementation is a significantly more secure digital environment that is actually easier to use. By combining these hardware tokens with an SSO experience, staff can access the tools they need through a consistent and streamlined login process. This approach ensures that the department maintains high security standards across the board while remaining inclusive of the unique needs of our field operations.
