The Big Bear Alpine Zoo has introduced its first-ever immersive, nature-based holiday light walk, Alpine Zoo Wild Lights. This new mountain tradition transforms the zoo’s pathways into a winter wonderland, featuring nearly two million LED and solar-powered lights that illuminate the alpine night sky.

An Immersive Journey Through Four Light Zones

The experience is designed to tell a story that honors the mountain’s wildlife and natural beauty across four themed areas:

  • The Great Pine & Wilderness Gateway: Guests are greeted by a 100-foot illuminated pine tree and a glowing gateway, featuring photo opportunities with a golden teddy bear and local performers singing holiday classics.
  • The Village of Light: This community plaza and playground features walk-through ornaments and holiday trees, with seasonal treats available from the Moonridge Coffee Co. Zoo Café.
  • The North Pole Path: A festive trail filled with giant gift boxes, a family of glowing snowmen, and Santa’s sleigh for the perfect family selfie.
  • Dark Sky Grove: A tranquil, solar-powered installation representing the planets and stars. This area highlights Big Bear’s commitment to the Dark Sky Initiative, which aims to reduce light pollution and protect local wildlife.

A Partnership for the Community

The event is a collaborative effort between Visit Big Bear and the Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District. This partnership was established not only to create a unique after-hours experience for visitors but also to support the zoo’s rehabilitation mission. A portion of the proceeds from the event—which is expected to generate approximately $340,000 in ticket revenue—will be donated back to the zoo to fund its animal care and conservation efforts.
