Big Bear Alpine Zoo recently completed improvements to the pond within its wolf enclosure, addressing a behind-the-scenes operational challenge that affected both animal care and staff efficiency.
The pond is an important feature of the wolves’ habitat, but routine draining, filling, cleaning, and maintenance previously required staff to access controls from within the enclosure. That meant the wolves had to be moved out of the encounter area before employees could safely service the pond, creating additional handling for the animals and adding time and complexity to what should be a routine maintenance task.

To improve the process, Zoo staff installed new drain and fill control valves that can be operated from outside the wolf enclosure. The upgraded system allows employees to control the pond’s water supply and drainage without entering the habitat.
While the physical improvements are relatively simple, the operational benefits are significant.
Staff can now perform routine pond maintenance more safely and efficiently while allowing the wolves to remain in their encounter area for longer periods. Reducing the need to relocate the wolves for routine servicing also helps minimize unnecessary disruptions and stress associated with moving animals between spaces.
The improvements provide an added layer of separation between staff and the wolves during pond maintenance, supporting safe animal-care practices while making the system easier to operate. New exterior controls, plumbing modifications, and access to the pond’s drain system give staff a more practical way to manage water changes and maintenance as needed.
This project reflects the Zoo’s continued focus on improving its facilities not only for visitors, but also for the animals and employees who use them every day. Small infrastructure improvements can make a meaningful difference when they improve safety, reduce animal disturbance, and allow animal-care staff to spend their time more efficiently.
The upgraded wolf pond system is another example of Big Bear Alpine Zoo identifying an operational challenge and implementing a practical solution that supports animal welfare, employee safety, and long-term facility operations.
