The Bloomington Recreation and Park District recently enhanced youth sports opportunities by constructing a brand-new T-Ball field at Kessler Park, completed entirely in-house by District staff.

Kessler Park is home to a four-diamond baseball and softball complex that serves as the primary facility for Bloomington Little League, one of the largest programs in the area with enrollment exceeding 400 youth participants. With only four regulation fields available, scheduling games—especially for T-Ball—presented ongoing challenges. Traditional baseball fields are not well suited for T-Ball due to the smaller field size requirements, and accommodating these games often extended play days and limited field availability for other divisions.

To address this need, BRPD identified an underutilized grass area within the park that had previously gone unused. This space was repurposed to create a dedicated T-Ball field, now known as Field 5, specifically designed for younger players.

During the fall season, a nearby dog park was removed and relocated, allowing the District to creatively reuse existing fencing to construct a home run fence for the new field. Additional improvements included the installation of foul poles, a permanent home plate station, base anchors, benches, and regularly painted foul and infield lines. These enhancements created a safe, age-appropriate, and welcoming environment that allows T-Ball players to enjoy the game while feeling like they are playing “in the big leagues.”

This project was completed at a very low cost and delivered a significant impact, providing Bloomington Little League with increased scheduling flexibility, more completed games, and a dedicated space for its youngest athletes. The new T-Ball field demonstrates the Bloomington Recreation and Park District’s commitment to innovation, resourcefulness, and supporting youth sports through thoughtful, community-driven solutions.
