Arrowbear Fire Station – Highway 18
The Arrowbear Fire Station is located between two blind curves on Highway 18, creating a significant visibility challenge for emergency responders. When firetrucks leave the station, firefighters have limited sight distance and very little time to determine whether approaching traffic is coming around the curves.
Recognizing this public safety concern, Supervisor Rowe identified the location as a priority safety project and is willing to fully fund the improvements. Because the project is located within Caltrans’ jurisdiction, San Bernardino County Public Works coordinated with Caltrans to develop and implement a safety solution.
Public Works + Caltrans Safety Improvements
The project includes:
- 3 flashing beacons equipped with firetruck warning signs to alert approaching motorists.
- 1 fixed signal activation located inside the Arrowbear Fire Station, allowing firefighters to activate the warning system when responding to an emergency.
- 3 remote handheld transmitters that allow fire personnel to activate the warning system remotely when needed.
These improvements provide advance warning to motorists and increase visibility for emergency responders, creating a safer environment for both firefighters and the traveling public.
Project Funding
Supervisor Rowe has identified this as a public safety project and is willing to fully fund the improvements, subject to coordination and approval with Caltrans due to the location being within Caltrans’ jurisdiction.
Improving Emergency Response Safety
A coordinated effort between Supervisor Rowe, San Bernardino County Public Works, and Caltrans is helping provide a safer and more visible emergency response operation on Highway 18.
