San Bernardino County Public Works has completed its 2026 Chip Seal and Scrub Seal Program, preserving 96.49 miles of County-maintained roads in the Essex, Barstow, Lucerne Valley and Angelus Oaks communities.
The program included more than $8 million in roadway preservation work across four major projects:
- Goffs Road: 22.44 miles in Essex
- Main Street & Others: 24.31 miles in Barstow
- North Side Road & Others: 42.23 miles in Lucerne Valley
- Glass Road & Others: 7.51 miles in Angelus Oaks
Chip seal and scrub seal are preventive maintenance treatments used to protect pavement before more serious deterioration occurs. This work helps extend the life of County roads, improve roadway conditions and reduce the need for more costly repairs in the future.
Public Works crews completed the projects across a range of desert and mountain environments, including several remote locations throughout the county.
By completing preventive maintenance before roads require major rehabilitation, San Bernardino County is helping preserve its transportation infrastructure, maintain reliable travel and support safer, more dependable connections for the communities these roads serve.
