The County maintained portions of Old El Mirage Road has suffered from years of erosion. As a result of this erosion the road surface elevation became significantly lower than the surrounding drains, contributing to standing water in the roadway during heavy rain events. The native material would also become overly saturated, resulting in muddy conditions along certain portions of this dirt road. The road became impassable for most passenger cars or vehicles without high clearance. DPW maintenance crews imported approximately 10,000 tons of class 2 aggregate base, grading and compacting it in lifts, to correct the road surface elevation and re-establish a crown in the roadway. This will allow the storm flows to drain properly to the pre-existing drains and help reduce standing water, over saturation, and muddy conditions.
